The University of Chester is a public university in the UK that was established in 1839. It can be considered as the first purpose-built teacher training college in the UK located in Chester, England. In 1839, the institution came into being as Chester Diocesan Training College. It formally became affiliated to the University of Liverpool in 1921. Later, the courses offered by the college expanded beyond teacher education to include science and arts degrees. As a result, the name was changed to Chester College of Higher Education in 1974. 

The college was awarded a full university status in 2005, and from then on it came to be known as The University of Chester.
